Job Description
Main Purpose of Job:
The Premises Assistant is responsible to the Premises Manager and to the Headteacher, for the general upkeep of the School premises and in providing a safe, secure, clean and warm environment for all site users and visitors. To deputise for the Premises Manager in his/her absence as agreed.
Principal Accountabilities:
Security
- Opening and locking of gates, doors and windows as appropriate.
- Taking reasonable steps to minimise loss or damage to property and staff.
- Patrolling the site at appropriate intervals.
- Ensuring that intruders are dealt with adequately in accordance with the school’s practice and where necessary keeping the police informed, subject to guidelines, on health and safety requirements.
- Taking responsibility for fire and intruder alarms.
- Ensuring that the necessary action is taken to minimise risk of further intrusion and damage, pending more permanent repairs.
- Reporting all burglaries to appropriate Authorities including the Headteacher, Premises Manager, and Police.
- Ensure gates and entrances are kept clear.
- Deal with dangerously parked cars both on site and immediately outside the school gate eg zig zag yellow lines.
Maintenance
- Taking responsibility as required by the Premises Manager for the maintenance & upkeep of premises, including buildings, fixtures, fittings and furniture.
- Carry out minor repairs and report defects to line manager – ordering repairs and work after agreement with line manager.
- Use any specific skills or expertise where possible.
- Engage in preventative maintenance – to eliminate potential hazards.
- Taking responsibility as required by the Premises Manager for checks on drains, gullies, toilets etc taking appropriate action as necessary.
- Taking responsibility for monitoring contractors on site including cleaning and ground maintenance, ensuring safety procedures are adhered to and work completed satisfactorily.
- Conducting mandatory checks/ monthly surveys of facilities, rectifying issues where possible and alerting premises manager.
- Maintain stock lists of equipment and furniture.
Heating, Ventilation and Plant
- Taking responsibility as required by the Premises Manager for gas or electric meter readings.
- Dealing with any faults and defects as required including checking and resetting breaker fuses.
- Check functioning of systems – maximise fuel efficiency.
- Check and replace lamps, tubes etc in light fittings.
- Test fire alarm and other alarms regularly.
Safety
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment referring all hazards to the nominated Health & Safety Officer for the establishment.
- Have knowledge of use and maintenance of fire precautions and equipment.
- Clear ice and snow putting down salt to give access and egress to site.
- Investigate and report all accidents and potential hazards involving staff or plant for which responsible.
- Check safety doors are secured against unauthorised entry where appropriate.
- Take responsibility for appropriate notification to exterminate pests and vermin, ensuring that such work is carried out while pupils are not on site.
Cleaning
- Playground – sweeping, clearing litter and debris including green areas – weeding on hard surfaces excluding the use of pesticides.
- Cleaning up bodily fluids and checking soiling of toilet areas throughout day, subject to Health & Safety guidelines.
- Report any problems with the cleanliness of the site to line manager.
Porterage
- Dustbin management – waste removal.
- Help all school staff – eg assisting with large display mounting, moving of sets for productions, repairs to classroom/school equipment.
- Within capabilities remove and store furniture in available storage facilities.
- Open and lock up for evening lettings when required.
- Furniture moving, including dining tables and chairs where necessary.
General Duties –as line manager requests
- Liaise in a professional manner with other users of school site.
- Oversee and co-ordinate deliveries of stock, supplies, etc to correct storage site.
- Managing lettings; ensuring all site users comply with H and S policies and signed Risk Assessments. Carrying out statutory maintenance checks and premises duties during the period of the let.
- Assisting with the set up and running of events such as PTA school fairs etc as required.

Educational Qualifications
- Good basic education.
Skills & Abilities

Ability to relate well to children and adults, work constructively as part of a team, understanding school roles and responsibilities and your own position within these.

Ability to prioritise & be flexible, depending on needs of school.

Qualified in a trade skill (desirable)
Experience
- Knowledge of Health and Safety.
- Ability to carry out minor repairs.
- An interest in IT (desirable)
Personality
- Ability to be a good representative of the school when dealing with the public, parents, children and contractors.
- A willingness to learn, attend training and increase skills.
Other Requirements
- Prepared to work outdoors approximately 50% of the working week.
- Vehicle driver (desirable)
Salary & contract
Initially for 5 hours a week, with the possibility of more hours
Monday to Friday 3pm to 4pm
Grade 3, SCP5 - £17.03 per hour before deductions
Fixed term until 22 July 2027
